You've probably noticed a wider range in topics that I've posted about lately and I just wanted to fill you in on what to expect to come! I'll still be bringing you my favorite in beauty, so don't worry! It may seem a little hodgepodge at first until the dust settles. Thanks for joining me on my journey!

Follow me on Instagram to see my photos for the week first!

Why?
Although I'll always love reviewing beauty products and I've focused a lot on natural, organic, vegan and/or chemical free beauty products, its time to focus on my overall health. I grew up in a really healthy household where skim milk, whole grains and vegetables with every meal were common. My family has also had a great interest in natural and alternative remedies and for my mother working in health care for her entire career, we sure have a distrust in some traditional modern medicine practices such as over prescribing medications. I learned a lot from my dear Aunt Sue who would make her own noodles from scratch, introduce us to green powder called Barley Green and show us how to wash clothes without laundry detergent. Her memory and spirit drive me along in my quest for overall health and wellness.

What's in store?
  • Clean Eating and healthy recipes
  • Fitness & health product reviews
  • Fitness & health product giveaways (I've got one in the works that you're going to love!
  • Updates on my weight loss and progress
  • Wellness series
    • My first post in this series was about my adventures in cupping. Stay tuned and journey along with me in my quest to find natural remedies that work!
  • Fitness Friday

  • And much, much more! Could a cookbook be in the works? :)

Wellness Series: My Adventures in Cupping

Background/Why I'm doing this:
Whenever I have a problem, I seek out all possible reasonable solutions. Some of those problems include allergies, migraines and chronic back and neck pain due to stress and tension. My family has always first looked to natural remedies and I managed the symptoms the best that I could. When it got to a point where it was just too much to take and was affecting my daily well-being, I sought out solutions. One of the main things that I did was to go and get a massage whenever the pain got tear worthy. With the help of my massage therapist, a source of my issues was clear: Stress!

The stress of my job working with at risk children and children in need along with Guardian ad Litem work for adults with disabilities and generally working with those whose lives are at a low just isn't going to go away. I believe I was meant to do this work for a reason. And so since the source of stress isn't going to go away, I need to find ways to deal with the consequences. Basically I carry stress in my neck and shoulders and the muscles get so tight that blood flow is restricted and so there is a build up of lactic acid which leads to migraines and sinus pain. It was through traditional massage that the reason for my pain was clear and that was the first step in being able to treat it effectively.

This post is based on my own experience and results and in no way constitutes medical advice. Always consult your medical professional before undertaking any new treatments.

What I've tried:
  • chiropractors
  • massage therapy for pain relief
  • 8 years+ of allergy shots, Rx and over the counter allergy pills and steroid shots
  • Neti pot
  • acupuncture
  • traditional doctor who prescribed me medication with horrible side effects (1/2 my body being numb for hours)
  • exercise
  • foam roller
  • ibuprofen to reduce swelling
  • coffee & hot showers for migraines
  • icing my neck
  • aromatherapy with lavender and an all natural muscle rub
  • 3 day Kaeng Raeng detox, doing a regular Sonnes #7 detoxification
  • changing the way I eat to clean eating.
What worked?
All of these natural remedies have made a huge difference and given me back some quality of life. This is why when I read about the ancient Chinese method of cupping in Prevention magazine, I wanted to try it immediately. It had the same goal that I did: to improve blood flow and circulation in order to rid my body of toxins and break up build of of toxins, thus relieving pain and pressure. I was THRILLED to find a practitioner in my area who did cupping and not so patiently waited nearly a month and a 1/2 to get in.

What is cupping?
  • Ancient Chinese therapy
  • When applied to the skin, suction is created which draws an increase in blood and qi (vital energy) to an area of imbalance
  • Whereas a traditional massage uses compression, cupping uses suction
  • Draws toxins and disease out of the body and helps maintain good health
  • Loosens and lifts connective tissues, breaks up and drains stagnation while incereasing blood & lymph flow to skin and muscles in ways not possible with compression
  • May be helpful for asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, fibromyalgia and neuralgia
  • There are many different forms including traditional fire glass, suction therapy in the form of bodywork, facial cupping, massage cupping.
    • Suction therapy in form of bodywork is best for traumatic injuries, orthopedic conditions, deep tissue and sports massage, lymphatic drainage, abdominal massage, neurological dysfunctions, myofascial release, health maintenance and relaxation
    • Facial cupping can be good for sinus infections and inflammation because of the loosening and draining effects of the cups. This can also be a facial treatment which can help with lines, wrinkles and soften scar tissue.
    • Massage cupping creates negative pressure which can feel great. The pulling action engages the parasympathetic nervous system which allows for a deep relaxation throughout the body
  • Some practitioners actually diagnose from the results they see from cupping, which are called markings. They appear like bruises but are not bruises and are not painful.

Baguanfa Rubber Cups
  • "Made of an improved composite formula of natural rubber. The marvelous benefits of these advanced cups
  • Can easily change shape – making for an amazing array of places these cups can be used on the body – elbows, knees, scapula, hands, feet, abdominals, shoulders, spine, etc., etc., etc.
  • Bony prominences are no longer off limits to moving cups. The flexibility of these cups make them the best choice in joint manipulations, Thai Massage, Watsu, PediCupping, Sports Massage and OrthopediCupping"
My markings
My experience:
  • It was not painful, but could be slightly uncomfortable at times especially during massage cupping when my therapist was working on a particularly tender and sensitive area, usually my shoulders or when a cup was suctioned on really tight
  • My cupping lasted about an hour and was a combination of the traditional fire glass cupping where a cotton ball with alcohol is lit on fire and placed inside a glass cup to get rid of the oxygen and then placed on my back. This is not hot but may be warm, it was not painful nor did I get burnt. My therapist would place them all over my back after meeting with me to discuss why I was there. Some stayed suctioned on longer than others. She then popped some on and off with more speed.
  • My therapist also did a Russian method which included the placement of cups along my spine.
  • She also used massage cupping which was done with the rubber cups pictured above. This would be placed at my lower back and moved upwards over my shoulder and onto my arm. Some were left on my shoulder or arm area. This felt like a massage and was relaxing and calming, except when therapy was focused on a particularly sensitive area like my pectorals.
  • Overall I felt relaxed and calm and really enjoyed the experience and will return
  • One session could be enough to help, or you may need 2 or 3. My therapist recommend dynamic cupping next time where I would do stretches while cupping. She indicated she couldn't get all the toxins out in one session for me which I fully believe.
My results:
  • My markings were visible after and are still visible the day after. These can last a few hours up to a couple weeks. I had darker markings on my right side than my left which wasn't too surprising since I carry everything on that shoulder and usually have one side that is more tense and tight than the other.
  • I followed instructions and turned off my air conditioner after and took a bath in comfortable temperature water with Epson salts to soak my back and drank tons of water.
  • I had a lot of energy that night
  • I slept great and woke up feeling motivated and refreshed
  • The next day I went on an hour walk which was one of the best walks I've ever taken. It felt like I had an engine behind me powering me through my walk. I maintained a very brisk pace and felt great while doing it. I felt like I reached a milestone in my exercise goals where I not only enjoyed it but felt amazing while doing it.
  • I still have some soreness and stiffness and allergies (I'm allergic to grass, trees and weeds). I noticed towards the end of my walk I started getting a headache and once I got home and chugged some water, took a shower and an allergy pill, I was good to go.
  • I'm looking forward to going back in a couple of months and really felt it worked for me. I feel a change in my energy levels and feel much more positive.
  •  I believe in alternative therapies and I'm so glad I've experienced cupping. I think it will be one more step towards my goal and will be crucial to my success.

Summer Scents from L'Occitane

If you’re searching for the perfect summer scent, look no further than L’Occitane. The Provencal Eaux de Cologne Collection brings you floral, citrus and aromatic options with Ravissante, Universelle and Captivante. Women and men will enjoy these irresistible fragrances inspired by summer in Provence. This is 10 ounces of perfume for $52 which is an amazing price for such a huge bottle and a high end luxury brand.

About: Aromatic Provencal herbs meet zesty lime and bergamot in the enchanting Eau Captivante. Men and women will be captivated by this irresistible blend of sparkling green and woody aromas, which also contains the essential oils of Mediterranean mint and basil. Our generously sized bottle, modeled after the architecture of Provencal fountains, will provide long-lasting aromatic escape! For men or women.

My thoughts: If you're like me and are sensitive to scents you're going to love L'Occitane. My favorite scent has become L'Occitane's Jasmine & Bergamote. You can check out my review of that here. This scent also has bergomot in it and a nice light citrus scent with some deeper woody notes. I actually think this would be wearable for a man or a woman and with a 10oz bottle, you'll have plenty to go around between you and your significant other. This is a scent that is light and yet not too light that once you spray it you no longer smell it anymore. I was really excited to test out another fragrance from L'Occitane as I'm in love with the Jasmine & Bergomate and I'm not disappointed. This is such a lovely everyday wearable scent. I've also tested the others in-store and love them all! I was extremely impressed with their perfume and cologne selections.
Capturing the universal freshness of citrus fruits, Eau Universelle will appeal to men and women alike. Formulated with the essential oils of Mediterranean bergamot and grapefruit, this eau de cologne is a real whirlwind of freshness, built on a harmony of invigorating sunny citruses. Our generously sized bottle, modeled after the architecture of Provencal fountains, will provide long-lasting refreshment! For men or women.
This irresistable eau de cologne inspires lighthearted spontaneity with a core of citrus blended with sweet fruits. Its formula includes Mediterranean bergamot essential oil and pomegranate extract. For women. Limited edition!
If you're a fragrance enthusiast or just sensitive to scents like me and are looking for a new brand to try, I highly recommend L'Occitane. Check out their website here: http://usa.loccitane.com

Fitness Friday: My Week in Tips

Top 10 Tips to Clean Eating Success
I've been doing clean eating for a couple months now and am down nearly 10 pounds and noticing even bigger changes in how my body looks, how my clothes fit and my energy levels. This week I'm going to give you some of my best tips for staying on track and how to get back on track after a slip!

Clean Eating Basics:
  • No white sugar or white flour, limited sodium especially no table salt
  • No preservatives
  • Minimally processed food, as close to the "source" as possible
  • Limit dairy to organic from grass fed cows, lots of raw nuts, fruits and veggies
  • Healthy oils and fats like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocados
  • No GMOs (Genetically Modified), Limited Gluten, Limited/no MSG, Limited/no "natural flavors" which are really chemically created in a lab
  • Purchase foods with the least amount of ingredients and ingredients that you can pronounce and recognize.

1. Build a network of support
Whether this means finding a walking buddy or a friend you can talk to and eat healthy with or joining a weight loss group on facebook, you're going to want to have people you have to talk to and celebrate in your successes with and who will build you back up when you are down. Having a circle of support and people to talk to are key.

2. Take advantage of free apps, websites, etc.
Two the apps I use on my smart phone the most are Fooducate and My Fitness Pal. With Fooducate, I can enter my specific goals and ask for alerts if a product isn't vegan, vegetarian, contains GMOs, etc. You can also scan foods at the grocery store and Fooducate will tell you on a scale of A to D where this food rates and why. It also suggests healthier alternatives in the same category. It has been a huge key to my success and makes shopping a heck of a lot easier! Be careful of the trap of food that appears healthy, ie the use of green makes you think a product is healthier or the use of red and yellow in advertising is there to target and lure you in!

With My Fitness Pal, I can enter my weight, my goal weight and how many pounds I want to lose per week. My goal right not is 1.5 pounds. It then sets a calorie goal for you to reach in order to make that weight loss goal for the week. It also tracks how much % of your meal is protein, carbs and fat. Ideally you want to have 40% protein, 20% carbs and 20% fat. You can also add friends and encourage them on there and vice versa. I've logged in every day for over two weeks and it definitely gets easier as you use it more and it remembers recent foods too so entering it becomes easier with time. Its really opened my eyes to portion sizes and how many calories are in food, especially when I purchase a meal out. This also encourages me to work out in a week where I haven't quite met my calorie goals.

Butterfly pork chop, asparagus with local sheep's cheese, quinoa with caramelized onions.

3. Reward yourself!
Reward yourself with fun healthy items that further encourages your weight loss. One of my favorite items is MaxFlowSport's no slip hairbands. These keep my unruly curls at bay and allow me to focus on my workout instead of constantly adjusting my headband or taking my hair down and putting it back up a million times. I also played soccer for 10 years and wish I had a product like this which I know my whole team would've loved. These are great for men and women and come in 4 styles and retail for $9.99. Some of my other favorite items which I've used to motivate myself and have become my go to workout gear are Old Navy's tank tops and V-neck short sleeve shirts, a new Champion bra and workout pants from Macy's brand Style & Company active sports pants. The only good & bad thing about finding some favorite new workout clothing is that they are starting to be too big on me! At least the MaxFlowSports headbands will always fit!
About MaxFlowSports Hairbands: Cross-Grip, the latest in hairband technology. It can manage your sweat, control your flow, and help you look your best. The MaxFlowSports Cross-Grip technology will secure the band and you will never look back. Quickly you are once again focused on your goal-excelling at whatever you do.

Enjoying my new gear :)

4. Eat what you like
Sometimes I purchase food because I feel I should like it or because its healthy or because everyone else is doing it. I'm all for trying things out, but I've given myself permission not to like certain foods and I'm okay with that. On that list goes cucumbers (which I use to like) and eggplant. I cook what I like and don't feel bad about forcing eggplant down my throat just because Bob Harper or another expert tells me to eat it.
Yummy turkey sandwich (turkey from my local meat locker), organic fried egg, spinach and tomatoes.

Cook healthy but focus on healthy foods you love. This will encourage you to stick with it and not get overly frustrated. I think many people have this struggle with Greek yogurt. They're told how healthy it is and how they should be eating it, but hate it. I encourage people to use it as a sour cream substitute or to mix it with peanut butter as a fruit dip or blend with fruit and honey. It will take some time for your taste buds to adjust, so still give it a fair try.

5. Take before & after pictures (and measurements)
Now I haven't lost a ton of weight pound wise, but I'm so glad that I took a before picture. I could really notice a difference in just a month's time! I didn't take starting measurements, but I wish I had. I'm noticing changes in places like my shoulders, stomach/waist line, etc that aren't as apparent on the scale. When you compare your pictures it will push you even further. I also love seeing other's before and afters and tell myself I want to be an AFTER!

6. Create a realistic plan
The clean eating plan I'm going by, I eat clean 80% of the time, with an allowance for one all out cheat meal per week as well as 2 semi cheat meals (packaged easier foods, subway, etc), along with 2 drinks per week. This makes it a realistic goal for me. I can go out with friends and enjoy a celebration.

7. Plan ahead
I've prepared for breakfast the night before many times now or at least had a plan of what I'm going to eat, so in the morning it requires no thinking about it. I've also been packing food with me so I don't get famished and make a bad choice. The easiest packable foods that I've been using are yogurt, raspberries, almonds, Mary's Gone Crackers, watermelon, etc. If I didn't do this, my plan wouldn't be working because I would be making decisions based solely on hunger. Also, go to the grocery store with a grocery list to make planned out meals and stick to what is on the list!
Plan for healthy snacks like this almond butter over Ezekiel brand bread

8. Take advantage of your local resources
I use to hate grocery shopping now I love exploring and finding new foods or picking up foods I've researched. If I know I'll be in a different town for the day, I research what farmers markets, food cooperatives and natural food options they have available and have fun with going to new places. My next trip is to check out a Trader Joe's about an hour away & make a day out of it!
My local farmer's market and only 1 block from me!

I've also signed up for a Farmers Market Challenge with my county where I get credit for going to a farmer's market 3 out of 4 weeks and I could win prizes. My county often has challenges you can enter in for free and possibly win prizes. Your county's website may have information on it about where and when farmer's markets are. A lot of farmer's markets will accept food assistance as well (Wisconsin WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). My city also has some local gardens where you can receive fresh produce if you volunteer your time or if you are in need. Use the free information you have access to!

9. Don't go too hard too fast
Don't try to go 100% gung ho with food or exercise. Once when I was super motivated to get in shape I did a hard core workout and was recovering for the next few weeks. It was brutal. With food, I'm taking my time and giving my body time to adjust. For example, I consider coffee to be "clean" and the caffeine from coffee to be a good thing when dieting. The discussion can go back and forth on this topic, but that's where I stand. Anyways, I started out limiting myself to 1 tsp of real sugar per cup of coffee with milk. I then went to 1 tsp of sugar with almond milk, then just almond milk and now I'm able to drink just plan black coffee. You will be amazed at how your tastes change and how easy and common sense clean eating will become.
Lemon chicken with asparagus, tomatoes, onions and bulgur wheat.

10. And MOST importantly...Stick with it!
Well duh, thats what this whole post is about. But it really will take some time to see some of the changes. My aunt always said it takes 21 days to change a habit and create a new one. Especially with clean eating, its going to take time to sink in and really become a monumental change in your life. You may feel less energy or a little sick to your stomach at first because your body isn't use to real food! It took me about three weeks and the cravings for bad food started dissipating. Start out slowly at your own pace.

Good luck. I hope these tips help. Be sure to comment and let me know what you're doing to get healthy or stay in shape! Also if you want to see my week's fitness, food and health photos before fitness friday, be sure to follow me on Instagram @Intrubeauty #fit2bfab!
